Treatment of a hydatid cyst in a patient with acute abdomen. A report of a case and bibliographic review

ABSTRACT

A 45-year-old female patient was admitted to the emergency room of General Hospital Dr. Dario Fernandez Fierro, with abdominal pain of six months of evolution, of mild intensity at the beginning till being incapacitating, and fever. Lab and acute abdomen tests were done. Abdominal ultrasound showed hepatic cystic images in the left lobe. Abdominal tomographic study was requested to delimit location and size of lesions, and to do differential diagnosis with other occupying lesions of liver. Before persistence of abdominal painful symptoms and the suspicion of possible secondary complications, it was decided to do programmed surgery. An exploratory abdominal laparotomy was done, with trans-surgical findings of hydatid cysts, thus, it was decided their resection. Diagnosis of hepatic hydatic disease was confirmed by image studies, trans-surgical findings, cytologic and hystopathologic studies, and serologic tests.
