ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on quality of life, as part of the comprehensive treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Patients and method: A prospective and comparative study, pretest-post-test type. Thirty patients with controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus, age less than 60 years, received an exercise program for 60 minutes, three times per week for 13 weeks. Blood glucose, weight, and BMI at the beginning and the end of the study were measured. The quality of life was evaluated using the SF-36 questionnaire (generic) and Diabetes-39 (specific), in week 0 and 13.
Results: We found significant improvement in six domains of the quality of life questionnaire and SF-36 domains perception of quality of life and severity of the disease questionnaire Diabetes-39 with
p ‹ 0.05 for both questionnaires; diminished blood glucose of 167 to 159 mg/dL (
p = 0.006), the weight had no significant difference from 67 kg to 65 kg (
p = 0.025), the decrease in BMI was not significantly different (
p = 0.865)
Conclusion: Supervised aerobic exercise changes and improves quality of life in diabetic subjects. Results show once more that exercise is an important part of the integral treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
