Textiloma. A report of a case

ABSTRACT
Textiloma is the term coined to describe a mass composed by an array of cotton and fibrosis around it. This paper reports the case of a 64-year-old male patient, admitted in emergency room diagnosed with abdominal tumor in study, blunt trauma and urgent laparotomy 8 years ago as antecedent. X-ray abdomen with suggestive image of textiloma. Patient was submitted to laparotomy finding abdominal mass with fibrous capsule attached to colon and abdominal wall, sponge gauze of previous surgery is exposed. Reaction types are acute or late. Acute presentation follows a septic course with abscess formation and granuloma; late presentation may develop in months or years after the initial surgery with fibrosis and adherence formation. Complications reported are obstruction, peritonitis, adhesions, fistulas, abscesses or become a capsule fibrous containing strange body.
