ABSTRACT
Helicobacter pylori is a microorganism that is usually found in the human stomach. It is considered that approximately 50% of human being is colonized by this bacterium. The percentage of colonization varies depending on the socio-economic status of the people and on the economic development of the country, with high rate of colonization seen in the most unprotected groups and in developing countries.
H. pylori is recognized as a pathogenic agent which is involved in the development of gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric carcinoma and MALT lymphoma. These pathologies are induced by the long-term colonization of the stomach by the microorganism, and the chronic inflammatory process it provokes, as well as the activities of its virulent factors. The knowledge derived from research on the physiology of
H. pylori and its host-parasite relationship have changed medical paradigms on the etiology, treatment, and prophylaxis of diseases associated with infection by
H. pylori and on the events of carcinogenesis induced by the microorganism.
