ABSTRACT
Hepatitis C virus infection is one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease in the world. The present review focuses on current literature about the relationship between chronic hepatitis C and diabetes mellitus type 2. Recent reports had demonstrated that anti-HCV antibodies can be found in 4 to 28% of diabetic patients, while among chronic hepatitis C patients the prevalence of diabetes mellitus could be as high as 50%. However, the role of hepatitis C virus in the development of impaired carbohydrate metabolism and its long-term implications are not defined.
