ABSTRACT
Anemia is prevalent as a public health problem in Venezuelan communities and is highly correlated with socioeconomic status, anthropometry and nutritional status. The objective of this research is to determine the incidence of anemia among schoolchildren in urban and rural localities in the north of Anzoátegui State during the year 2009. This is a non-experimental field study, transactional and prospectively performed in schoolchildren aged 6 to 12 years of public and private schools from Barcelona and rural localities "El Frances" and "El Pedregal". Blood samples were taken for hematologic analysis, anthropometry and socio-economic survey Graffar-Mendez Castellano was used. The results were analyzed using SPSS V17® in English. We analyzed 103 children from urban and rural locations, 56 and 47; respectively, through a non-probability sampling. Anemia in urban areas was 10.7% and 14.9% in rural ones. Most children with anemia belonged to the socioeconomic strata II and IV. Based on the anthropometry, there were some cases in critical zone and mild malnutrition in both locations. Mean and median hemoglobin were similar for each age. There was no significant difference between sex for both groups with anemia, and likewise; there were no differences between the values of hemoglobin from both localities according to Student test (p› 0.05). From the 13 cases with anemia, 10 were normocytic-normochromic, and 3 were hypochromic-microcytic.
