ABSTRACT
It has been seen in several clinical reports that assisted orthodontic management provided by corticotomy, results in a significant reduction of orthodontic treatment time and a decrease in root resorption risk and an increased orthodontic stability after treatment. The success of this therapy depends on a comprehensive treatment planning and selection of the case by the orthodontist and periodontist. This procedure requires a surgical approach to access the cortical bone and to carry out a selective alveolar decortication, which activates a cascade of physiological events that allow accelerated orthodontic movement. Both, the clinical and histological results are promising, but more evidence must be created and demonstrated. This could be an invaluable clinical tool for orthodontists whose patients unwilling to undergo extended orthodontic treatment periods.
