ABSTRACT

Acute diverticulitis it is a complication of colon diverticular disease, which it is observed frequently in older patients, the incidence in patients under 50 years old is variable, several studies have shown a high virulence, been necessary emergency surgical treatment, by this there is the recommendation that patients younger 50 years in which has been documented acute diverticulitis are candidates to elective surgery. Recently prospective studies have shown modifications to this recommendation, the data available indicate that elective surgery is useful in patients with severe acute diverticulitis, and this data indicate that morbility and mortality it is similar to observed in older patients, and the elective surgery don not be justified, due confusing data it is necessary prospective studies to determine if elective surgery it is useful or not.
