ABSTRACT
Objectives: Show that the incidence of iron deficiency anemia has increased in the last decade in the pediatric population treated at a private clinic.
Material and Methods: Retrospective, descriptive, observational, comparative study was carried out from January 1, 1994 to December 30, 1997 for the first period and from January1, 2000 to December 30, 2004 for the second period. Case reference criteria by Dallman for anemia was taken. First statistical analysis was performed using frequency tables.
Results: Inclusion criteria covered by 764 patients and divided into two similar samples of 382 for each study period. The incidence of anemia in the first period for infants and toddlers was 14.5%, for children and adolescents was 22.9% in the second period for infants and toddlers was 31.5%, while for children and adolescents was 29.6%. In relation to sex was found that 27.7% were female and 20.6% were male with a tendency to be more common in women.
Conclusion: The incidence of anemia has increased in the last decade. Probably related to decreased intake of healthy food.
