ABSTRACT
Catatonia is a rare and severe psychiatric syndrome that can be potentially fatal. Is defined by the association of motor impairment (stupor, agitation, rigidity, negativism and stereotypical movements) and psychiatric symptoms (mutism, echolalia and verbiage) is most commonly associated with psychiatry disorders; however it’s important to rule out an underlying medical condition. The catatonic state in adolescent clinical diagnosis is a challenge. We describe the case of 16 years old male patient with behavioral changes followed by mutism, spasticity, fever, and autonomic instability, and therefore considered the possibility of malignant catatonic syndrome. The findings in the cerebrospinal fluid were suggestive of probably encephalitis viral. The patient was treated with anticonvulsants, lorazepam, and steroids with good evolution.
