ABSTRACT
Introduction and objectives: Prostatitis is the most common urological disease diagnosed in men between 29 and 49 years old (less than 50 years old). Prostatitis classification defined in 1995 by the National Institutes of Health in US (NIH) shows four categories according to its evolution and sintomatology (I, II, IIIa, IIIb and IV). Chronic Prostatitis is commonly caused by an enterobacterias infection. Even though there are other bacteria associated with chronic prostatic infection, the most controversial has been
Chlamydia trachomatis (
Ch.t.) This wasn’t considered as a important etiological factor for prostatits, but recently, it’s presence in prostatic fluid has been reported in 69.4%.
This study objective is to identify the presence of
Ch.t. (urethra & prostatic fluid) in patients diagnosed with chronic prostatitis.
Method and material: Patients diagnosed with chronic prostatitis, will be assessed as follows: sperm culture, polimerasa chain reaction (PCR) in urethra and prostatitc fluid citomorfology, the last two to identify
Ch.t. From 56 patients diagnosed with chronic prostatitis, 12 didn’t had all the laboratories needed for the study and so they had to be excluded.
Results: In the 56 studied patients, there was an average age of 46.2 years; 18 of them presented sperm culture positive to enterobacterias, 13 had a positive PCR to in urethra and 8 of them had a prostatic citomorfology positive to
Ch.t. in prostatic fluid.
Conclusions and comments: 56 patients with chronic prostatitis diagnosis were studied; 37.5% with
Chlamydia trachomatis (of these it corresponded to 38% in prostate and 61.9% in urethra).
The high prevalence of
Ch.t. in chronic prostatitis makes of extreme importance its study.
