ABSTRACT
Introduction: Surgical treatment is considered the standard palliative approach to restore malignant luminal obstruction of the GI tract. Endoscopic treatment through the installation of self-expandable metal stents has provided an alternative option in patients who were considered unfit for palliative surgery.
Case presentation: A 48-year-old man with outflow tract obstruction secondary to malignant duodenal obstruction due to recurrence of a gastroesophageal junction carcinoma was treated using self-expandable metal stents.
Conclusions: This case report shows that the endoscopic placement of self-expandable metal stents is an alternative therapy in the palliative treatment of malignant duodenal obstruction in patients at high risk, avoiding a major surgical procedure and significantly reducing morbidity and hospital stay of the patient.
