ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of the subthreshold (invisible) doubled frequency Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser in the treatment of the clinically significant diabetic macular edema.
Methods: Eighty-four eyes of 54 diabetic patients with clinical significant macular edema were prospectively treated with subthreshold (invisible) doubled frequency Nd:Yag laser photocoagulation. Follow-up was conducted for twelve months. We evaluated the evolution of the macular edema, treatment repetition, the visual acuity, the presence of scotomas and the post-laser macular complications.
Results: The reduction or elimination of the macular edema was observed in 67.9% of the eyes in the first 6 months after one or two treatment sessions and in 85.7% of the eyes with one to four treatment sessions after 12 months follow-up. Visual acuity improved in 48.8% of cases and in 34.5% it remained stable. No patient complained of scotomas after treatment and there were no laser complications.
Conclusions: Subthreshold (invisible) double frequency Nd:Yag laser photocoagulation is effective in the resolution of the clinically significant diabetic macular edema and also reduces the presence of conventional post-laser macular complications.
