ABSTRACT
In a 14-year period in a single institution we have performed 30 stem cell autografts in patients with multiple myeloma. The median overall survival (OS) has not been reached, being above 7 years. Whereas the 84-month overall OS was found to be 77%. These data are clearly superior to those obtained in a group of 23 patients treated with melphalan / prednisone in the same institution who had a median SV of 33 months with a 72-month OS of 30%. It is concluded that, in our experience, the long-term survival of individuals with multiple myeloma who received an autograft is clearly superior to that of patients treated with conventional chemotherapy. The long-term prognosis of patients with MM has improved substantially in the Clínica RUIZ de Puebla since the introduction of high-dose therapy rescued with autologous stem cell support.
