ABSTRACT
Background: Every year there are 297 cases of penile cancer that represent 0.6 patients per 100,000 habitants. The great majority are of the squamous cell type presenting more frequently in the gland (48%); the tumor suppressor gene p53 is involved in cellular apoptosis and its mutations are associated with a correlation with an infection of human papilloma virus.
Objective: To identify the relationship between human papilloma virus, p53 and BCL-2 mutations in the prognosis of penile cancer.
Material and methods: We realize a sectional cross study; there were included patients from the last 15 years. Age, pathologic stage and immunohystochemistry for p53, BCL-2 and human papilloma virus were analyzed. The statistics analysis was made with descriptive statistics, Kaplan-Meier charts and χ
2.
Results: 20 patients were studied; to p53 immunohystochemistry there were 13 positive (65%), and for human papilloma virus two positives (10%), one of them also for p53; the overall survival rate was of 44.8 months, while for the p53 positives was of 34.4 months.
Conclusions: There were no relation between human papilloma virus, p53 and BCL-2 with penile cancer.
