ABSTRACT
Introduction. Chylous ascites is an extremely rare and often unrecognized complication of abdominal trauma in patients with the battered child syndrome. The treatment of this condition has traditionally been nonsurgical, but the success rate is not always satisfactory.
Case report. We present an eight month old child who developed a chylous ascites resulting from child abuse. This male infant was admitted to our hospital with the suspicion of a battered child syndrome based on the presence of abdominal distention. The patient had a bilateral humeral fracture, right radius and bilateral left forearm fractures.
Discussion. We emphasize the importance of an early diagnosis and of a surgical treatment. This is case number nine in literature.
