ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hemangiomas are vascular tumors; usually appearing after the second week of life. We report a case of diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis with fatal development.
Case report: A 30 weeks of gestation premature female neonate manifested on the fifteenth day of life, round, reddish skin papules in various parts of the body, growing in number and size. Heart failure develops and ultrasound detected multiple cystic lesions in the liver and colon. Treated with steroids for six weeks but heart failure was refractory to treatment and the patient died after five months of age.
Discussion: Diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis is a challenge to overcome the visceral involvement mainly in the liver that causes a short circuit from left to right and withdrawal of blood that leads to a high-output heart failure with high fatality even with treatment. The various treatments for hemangiomas should be used as are available to each institution. Preliminary reports suggest that the use of propanolol in hemangiomas appears to be promising.
