ABSTRACT
Introduction: The importance of understand the perceptions of individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) over sexual function disorders (SFD) in relation to their treatment and addressing these with their doctor will help to understand the problem and find a better way to cope and deal with this problem. For this reason, we conducted a review of the literature, finding relevant information on the perception of treatment and the importance of doctor-patient relationship in search of it.
Methodology: To identify the items were used keywords: perception, impaired sexual function and diabetes mellitus. The selection criteria were: being articles of empirical studies of qualitative methodology and/or quantitatively, published from 1980 to 2009, without geographic or environmental, in adults, with no restrictions of gender or marital status, in spanish, english and portuguese in different electronic databases, located between the months of October and November 2010.
Results: There were 16 articles, 6/16 addressed the problem of treatment and the doctor-patient relationship. Less than a third of men with erectile dysfunction (ED) has ever sought treatment for their condition, most think they can be treated successfully. There were no data for the case of women. More than half of the subjects they wished to discuss their condition with their doctors, and expect these to begin boarding. While the reasons for not doing so is the damage to health, the economic burden, shame, and the importance of sex, in men and the personal characteristics of physicians and medical space and usually not related to aspects of the SFD patients.
Conclusions: We found more data reported for men, primarily in ED, that for women. This topic has been little studied, so more research is important to help us understand the perceptions of subjects to a better understanding and addressing the SFD.
