ABSTRACT
Prolactin is a protein hormone produced and synthesized by lactotrophs in the adenohipophysis. This hormone has several functions including those related to the reproduction. In this sense, it has been shown that prolactin had receptors in different sexual glands, being the prostate one of them. In this gland, prolactin induces synthesis and release of the prostatic semen, but also this hormone regulates the proliferation-apoptosis mechanism. The latter function is so important because following proliferation increase there is a high probability to develop prostatic pathologies like cancer. Up to date, there is a lot of information trying to explain the mechanisms triggered by prolactin to promote this pathology. However, the information still is not so clear. The knowledge today points up to a relationship between prolactin and testosterone in regulating the normal physiological conditions of the prostate; but in pathological conditions, the evidence favors a regulation of androgen receptors induced by prolactin. This could explain in general the effect of prolactin on the development of pathology in the prostate. This relationship between prolactin and steroid hormones in relation with the prostate function is central in this review.
