ABSTRACT
Background. Despite preventive efforts, dental extraction remains a common procedure in dental practice.
Objective: To identif y the most frequent causes of dental extraction in patients at an IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) Family Health Center
Materials and Methods: An obser vational, descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional study was carried out. Those examined werepatients of all ages requiring dental extraction who attended the abovementioned dental service between November 2007 and May 2008; subject to their prior informed consent, patients were surveyed to identify the reason for this procedure. Descriptive statistics were used to present the results.
Conclusions: Caries and periodontal disease were the most frequent reasons for extraction. The upper third right molar was the tooth most frequently extracted, with women being those most often treated. This procedure was most commonly performed on patients between 60 and 64 years old. The most common systemic diseases observed in patients were arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus type 2.
