ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the utilization of health services in case of disease, to identify the affiliation to the social security and the use of the preventive services of the inhabitants of the peripheral colonies of Xalapa.
Methodology. A survey was performed in 122 colonies in 2003. A probability, multi-stage sample was designed. The sample unit was the housing and the obtaining of the information was at family level. A questionnaire was applied to the person in charge of the home. This questionnaire included variables related to the health of each family member the utilization of the services, as well as socio demographic variables.
Results. The total of the sample was 369 families; 54.2% of them did not have the right to some institution of social security. 44% of them had at least a sick member in the last month; 29.3% looked for private service and 18.8% did not looked for any service. 87.5% of the families used some of the preventive programs of the health services.
Conclusions. The survey showed that a high percentage of all the people who became ill and were affiliated to the IMSS, did not use this service. The majority looked for a private doctor. Also, the non-insured population used in greater proportion the private services. The main causes people mentioned about not going to health institutions were lack ness of money and not considering necessary. What most of the people did was to medicate themselves. The most utilized preventive program were reproductive health and immunizations.
