ABSTRACT
Introduction. The medical services in the Centro Estatal de Cancerología had different evolutional stages, but without procedure manuals, making complicated an long process for first time patients to receive attention.Objective. The project identifies the road for the patient to follow to obtain their initial consultation and suggests some improvements.
Method. A poll was taken on 101 patients and 52 workers in the out patient area during january-february of 2005. The patient results had a level of 80% of confidence and an error of 5%; the analysis considers absolute frequency and variable percentages.
Results. In the patients, the age of the group of 25 to 44 years old predominated; 79.1% of the others came from another hospital of Health Center of SESVER, but only 23.8% had an appointment to receive attention, the others were orientated in their area and principal documents that they brought were: reference 95%, anatomopatology studies 56.4%, clinical laboratory 53.5%, radiologic 49.5% and ultrasound 39.6%, even though the workers gave the same documents different values. In the absence of procedure manual, the workers received personal indications, mostly verbal to get attention and the produced different modes on the attention. The waiting time for patients from the time they get there to the time they receive attention presents differents times in the both shifts: in the morning, the patients receive attention between 31 to 60 minutes;, but in the afternoon, the patients wait more than 3 hours.
