ABSTRACT
This paper evaluates the efficacy of nerve grafts in the repair of experimentally damaged motor nerves in rats, and determines if nimodipine preserves their integration. Thirty Wistar rats (in which the pectoral minor nerve was transected), were allocated in the following three groups; Group A repaired directly (n = 10), Group B repaired with a motor nerve graft (n = 10), Group C repaired with a sensory nerve graft (n = 10). Each group was divided in two subgroups (n = 5). While the first one was treated orally with 20 mg/kg/day of nimodipine during 30 days, the second one (control group) was only administered corn oil. At the end of treatment, motor activity and the histological evaluation of grafts (using rutinary histological strains) were analyzed. Motor activity was similar in all groups. In contrast, both sensory and motor grafts treated with nimodipine had less inflammatory cells and better nervous tissue conservation than those presented by rats treated only with corn oil. Nimodipine promotes the preservation and enhances the integration of nerve grafts.
