ABSTRACT
Fibromyalgia is officially recognized by the World Health Organization as a non specialized rheumatic illness, because it presents no lesional patterns. Its etipatogenia is unknown because there are no complementary or radiological tests which demonstrate its existence. Because of this fact, the diagnosis is based on the clinical antecedents and a physical examination of the patient. In 1997, Goldberg and Cols. investigated on the possible causes of the syndrome without obtaining conclusive results, but they maintained the idea that it was a multifactorial process (neurological, viral agents, problems in transmission and modulation of painful stimulus) with psycho-social consequences. Investigations have showed the existence of biochemical, neuroendocrine, muscular and psychological anomalies associated to fibromyalgia. The effectiveness of the intervention is based on a multidisciplinary treatment: use of medicines, physical activity, massage, stretching, postural hygiene and psychological intervention.
