ABSTRACT
Introduction. Intussusception is the more frequent cause of intestinal obstruction in infants. Hospitals around the world register between 10 to 50 cases. In our hospital during 2009, we treated 62 cases. Abdominal cramp, vomiting, mucohematic stools and abdominal tumor are the most relevant clinical manifestations. Intussusception associated to other diseases is uncommon, but associated to Bochdalek hernia is very rare.
Case report. An 8-months old male patient suddenly developed dyspnea and biliar vomiting. No abdominal cramp, mucohematic stools nor abdominal distention were present. A chest X ray showed the small bowel in the right thoracic cavity; additionally a Bochdalek hernia was identified. At laparotomy, the small bowel and the right hepatic lobe had migrated to thorax; an ileo-colic intussusception was an unsuspected condition. Hernia and intussusception were successfully corrected and the patient had an uneventful recovery.
Discussion and conclusions. We were unable to find similar reports in the literature consulted.
