ABSTRACT
Introduction. Traumatic injuries and accidents that occur in the home are a major cause of morbidity in children aged between 2 and 5 years. Depending on the severity there may be superficial injuries or severe life endangering accidents.
Materials and methods. Prospective study of one year of children who sustained a traumatic accident at home and, required hospitalization. Important epidemiological variables were analyzed by linear regression, Chi
2 and Spearman correlation coefficient, and central tendency measures. To this end, SPSS version 17 and Excel office 2007 were used.
Results. There were 131 victims being slightly more common in males. Most accidents took place in the middle of the week and in the afternoon. The bedroom was the most common site for accidents; falls were the usual mechanism. The most common injuries were long bone fracture, encephalo-cranial trauma and foreign body ingestion. Two children died after swallowing a small button size battery: one with profuse uncontrollable hemorrhage due to aorto-esophageal fistula and one owing to a perforation and mediastinitis. Intestinal perforation and pulmonary contusion were less common.
Conclusions. These events are more frequent and severe than is usually thought.
