ABSTRACT
Background and goals: The International Continence Society (ICS) definition for nocturia is “the complaint that the individual has to wake at night one or more times to void”. Nocturia impacts the quality of life. The bladder diaryis a very low used clinical tool. Our aim is report the relationship between the 24 hours voided volume and nocturia in patients suffering low urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).Material and methods: Records from patients with LUTS were reviewed. Using the ICS definition for poliuria cases were divided as: Control Group (GC): Urinary volume ‹2.8 L/24 h. Poliuric Group (GP): Urinary volume =/›2.8 L/24 h. Data were analyzed using SPSS10.0 software.
Results: 237 files were divided as: GC 208 controls, mean age was 49.09 years, mean urinary volume/24 h (MVU24) 1499.08 cc, the mean Qmax 14.456 cc/s; with 75% males and 25% females. Nocturia was finding in 88.94% (185/208) cases. GP 29 cases, the mean age 54.97 years (SD 15.95) with MVU24 of 3570.14 cc, mean of Qmax 16.086 cc/s; with 79.31% (23/29) males and 20.68%(6/29) females. Nocturia was find in 96.55% (28/29) cases.
Conclusions: In our series no statistic significant difference was find between two groups regarding sex (p = 0.284) and Qmax (p = 0.16) perhaps there was significant difference for age (p = 0.043) and nocturia (p = 0.010). Our results show “false” nocturia in poliuric patients without low urinary tract obstruction. The OR to have nocturia if poliuria is present was 3.48. This data can help to clinicians for explain to poliuric patients that they would be suffering nocturia even when lower urinary tract obstruction is not present.
