ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION. A preparation of cane liquor and fruit of the “crucetillo” (Randia monantha Benth) is drunk, it empirically, and apparently effective results, to counteract the eff ects of snake bites and stings from poisonous animals in the central zone of Veracruz state. OBJETIVE. To evaluate the toxicity of the drink consumed by locals as an antidote, as well as alcoholic extracts of the fruit, leaves and stems extracts prepared by us in the laboratory. MATERIALS AND METHODS. We used the fruit, leaves and stems of R. monantha Benth; alcoholic extracts used were obtained from sugar cane and ethanol by maceration and the toxicity evaluation was determined by bioassay of Artemia salina L., it also conducted a preliminary assessment of the chemical content of all extracts, using a thin layer chromatography. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS. The alcoholic extracts prepared by us as well as the drink prepared by the villagers showed no toxicity with the bioassay used, so the intake of tonic is safe. The separation and purification of the alcoholic extracts is in the process.REFERENCES
