ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare topical steroids against turbinate electrocauterization in allergic and vasomotor rhinitis.
Patients and method: Comparative, prospective and clinical study. Two groups of 27 patients each with allergic or vasomotor rhinitis were treated, the group 1 with nasal topical steroid (mometasone), 100 to 200 mg daily, for two months. The group 2 was submitted to turbinate electrocauterization with conventional technique. The patients were examined at 7, 15, 30 and 60 days.
Results: More improvements were observed in group 1 (topical steroid) than in group 2 (p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusion: Topical steroids are more effective than turbinate electrocauterization in turbinate hypertrophy.
