Causas de muerte en pacientes con lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) en el Hospital México de 1989 a 2004

ABSTRACT

Aim and objective: To determine the major causes of death among the systemic erythematosus lupus patients who died in Hospital Mexico. Methods: A list of autopsies reports with clinical diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus seen in Hospital Mexico from 1989 to the year 2004 was supplied by the Pathology Service database. The information was collected and analyzed. Results: 54 patients were studied with a female to male ratio of 6,7: 1. The mean age at presentation was 28, 3 years (range 6 – 64 years) and the mean age at death was 33,3 years (range 14 – 68 years). Infectious causes were the most common cause of death, occurring both early and late periods, in 28 (52,83%) patients, followed by pulmonary causes in 7 (13,21%) and renal chronic failure and gastrointestinal causes in 5 (9,43%) patients each. Conclusions: Infections were the most common cause of death and these deaths occurred throughout the course of illness.
