ABSTRACT
Urinary tract infections as a group are the most common bacterial infections in pregnant women. Physiological changes in pregnancy predispose women to acute upper urinary tract infections. The range of UTIs includes asymptomatic bacteriuria, cystitis and pyelonephritis. Screening for ITUs during pregnancy is worldwide recommended to prevent preterm labor as well as potentially fatal maternal complications such as shock from pyelonephritis.
