ABSTRACT
Breath tests have become an invaluable strategy to evaluate in vivo an array of enzymatic activities, organ functions and transport processes. Breath tests, either based on the measurement of hydrogen or methane, as well as the ones that use stable isotopes, are safe and have no secondary effects, can be used in children and adults, men and women, and even in pregnant women. This module reviews the most important aspects from the clinical and laboratory point of view, and their applications within the medical practice as the first line tests for the study of digestive diseases associated with malapsorption and intolerance to carbohydrates, including lactose and fructose, and forthe study of bacterial overgrowth, a syndrome closely linked to a wide variety of clinical disorders. Knowledge of the tests limitations and factors that influence the assays are important in order to properly interpret the results of the hydrogen based breath tests before a clinical decision can be made.
