ABSTRACT
Low back pain is one of the most common causes of consultation in the primary care level; it is responsible for an important percentage of work absenteeism and the economical impact of this pathology is very significant compared against other (more dangerous) diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. We must remember that the diagnosis is made by excluding other aetiologies like muscle inflammation, pathologies of the vertebral structure or medical conditions that may present themselves as an acute or chronic back pain. The presences of yellow flag or red flag symptoms are indications of the cause and they demand a more specialize approach. Further imaging or laboratory studies are only indicated when we suspect a medical cause or when the duration of the symptoms is more than 6 weeks (chronic back pain).
