ABSTRACT
PVS is described as a proliferation of synovial cells that lead to hypertrophy of the synovial membrane. The most important hystologic findings are multinucleated giant cells and hemosiderin laden macrophages. The etiology of the disease is for the most part unknown. Even though there are reports of malignization of lesions it’s still considered a benign disease. It can be divided into diffuse and local, depending on the amount of synovial membrane involved. The clinical picture is usually a middle aged patient presenting with monoarthritis involving large joints. The symptoms have usually been present for approximately 5.7 years before diagnosis. The presumptive diagnosis is done with the history and physical exam with the help of magnetic resonance imaging. The definite diagnosis is hystopathologic. There are many opinions regarding treatment, but the standard is to completely eliminate the lesion. The method used depends on the surgeon and whether the synovitis is diffuse or local.
