ABSTRACT
Atresia or acquired stenosis of the external auditory canal is a rare pathological condition characterized by the formation of thick, solid fibrous tissue in the medial or lateral part of the external ear canal that may become partially or completely obliterated by this inflammatory process and is present as a conductive hearing loss. Unlike congenital atresia, there is no osicular chain or auricular malformations. It may be originated by otitis media or chronic otitis external, and it may occur after a tympanoplasty. Other causes include nonsurgical trauma such as thermal or chemical burns and gunshot wounds. It has been speculated that the initial insult stimulates the formation of granulation tissue on the epithelium of the external ear canal and on the tympanic membrane. Diagnosis is clinical and subsequently confirmed by temporal bone computed tomography. The only effective treatment is surgery. The surgical procedure involves removal of the fibrotic tissue, canaloplasty, meatoplasty, and skin grafting. The main complication is re-stenosis. We present the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow up of four cases.
