ABSTRACT
Semen analysis is an essential test in the workup of couples consulting for infertility and in the study of male genital siseases. Semen analysis includes the examination of spermatozoa, seminal fluid and other cells present in the semen, such as leukocytes and bacteria. Semen analysis provides important information regarding the process of spermatogenesis, sperm function and sexual glands function. Laboratory personnel performing the assays should be efficiently trained to carry out this technique that helps the clinician with the differential diagnosis, supported by special assays, when necessary. An appropriate quality control must be followed that guaranties reproducible results and minimizes inter and intra-individual differences. The present module reviews the parameters of the basic routine semen analysis and the methodology for an adequate semen analysis. Finally, special tests are briefly described, including semen culture and penetration assays.
