ABSTRACT
Background: The tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound without an external stimulus. In general the tinnitus is subjective, making it difficult to evaluate and treat. Objective: To report the experience with the use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device in patients with tinnitus.
Material and method: A prospective-comparative study from March 2004 to January 2007, in the Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre, in which 68 patients where included in a 20 minute-10-session period of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with the posterior application of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, before and after the treatment period and one year after it.
Results: The point average of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory was 50.3 before, 33.5 pts. after a 10-session period, and 33.5 pts. after one year. There was a statistical significance in the improvement between the pre and post 10-session period, but not in the one-year period.
Conclusions: The transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device is effective as a short term treatment of patients with tinnitus.
