ABSTRACT
Background: The Rhinoconjunctivitis and Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) is the most standardized method to evaluate the impact of the disease.
Objective: To evaluate the quality of life of allergic rhinitis patients with a specific questionnaire.
Material and method: Descriptive survey. We included 56 patients with diagnosis of persistent allergic rhinitis from January to December 2007. There were 35 women (62.5%).
Results: The mean age was of 28 years (range 12 to 65 years). All of them where diagnosed with persistent, moderate allergic rhinitis in 36 cases, and severe in 20 cases. The most common symptoms were: rhinorrea, congestion or nasal obstruction, sneezing, fatigue, itching, and headache. All the areas had a moderate impact (2.26 to 3.75). The most affected areas were the nasal symptoms, and practical problems (3.75 and 3.73). The lowest scores were observed in sleep disturbance and ocular symptoms (2.26 and 2.46). The correlation between clinical evaluation and the Rhinoconjunctivitis and Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire was r
2 = 0.72 and
p ‹ 0.05.
Conclusions: The Rhinoconjunctivitis and Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire should be applied to all patients wit the purpose to determine the most affected areas to establish the best medical treatment. It is a cheap instrument and well accepted by the patients.
