ABSTRACT
Ectropion of the cervix is a common disorder in gynecological practice. The most successful treatment is destruction of the involved tissues by electrocauterization, cryosurgery or laser beam, which produce subsequent healing by fibroblastic proliferation and reepithelization. Complete healing may take up 8 weeks. Trying to shorten the time required for reepithelization, the efficacy of the watery extract of
Triticum vulgare in a double blind study comparative with placebo was evaluated, on 40 patients with ectropion, all treated with laser beam. Two groups were formed afterwards: the first group was treated with vaginal suppositories of
Triticum vulgare, twice a day for 2 consecutive weeks; the patients of control group received placebo. The watery extract of
Triticum vulgare proved capable of shortening the time of reepithelization. At day 40th, in the
Triticum vulgare-treated group, showed total whole reepithelization in 40% of cases versus 5% in the placebo group; 75% vs 35% at day 48th, and 85% vs 55% at day 56th, respectively. No side effects were observed. It is concluded that the watery extract of
Triticum vulgare can hasten the reepithelization post-laser beam therapy of ectropion and has good vaginal tolerability.
