ABSTRACT
Malignant mesenchymal neoplasias of the breast are relatively rare tumors whose terminology has to receive universal approval. With classification based on hystogenesis rapidly gaining acceptance, we describe a fibrosarcoma of the breast. A 58 year-old woman was referred to this hospital because of the progressive increase of a mammary nodule located in the left breast. Simple mastectomy revealed a 10 cm gray whitish tumor. Histological examination showed a neoplasm characterized by a monomorphic cellular proliferation of spindleshaped cells, displaying a repetitive herring-bone and storiform growth pattern. Immunohistochemical assay showed that tumor cells were diffusely positive for vimentin, but negative stained with cytokeratins, desmin, smooth muscle actin and S100 protein. A diagnosis of mammary fibrosarcoma was posed. The literature about changing concepts regarding classification of malignant mesenchymal tumors of the breast is reviewed.
