ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hydronephrosis is a renal collector system dilation that results from an inadequate drainage or retrograde urinary flow.
Objetive: To create an Hydronephrosis experimental model in rabbits.
Material and Methods: We operate 20 rabbit males, New Zeland race, weight 2.0 to 3.5 kg, under general anesthesia, we put a clip on the proximal third of left ureter. Rabbits were sacrified 3 weeks later and both kindneys were fixed in formalin por histophatological evaluation.
Results: 18 rabbits completed study, two died. 18 lef clipped kidneys presented macroscopic Hydronephrosis (group A) in relation to control right kidney (group B). There was statistical difference in longitudinal diameter (mean A=44.5 mm vs B=36.9 mm) p=0.0001913 and transversal (A=31.8 mm vs B=24.9 mm), p=0.0002850, respectively. 100% of hydronephrotic left kidneys presented histophatological changes (pielocaliceal dilation, flat urotelium, chronic inflammatory infíltrate, dilate tubules and fibrosis), in relation to control group.
Conclusions: In this study there were demonstrated macroscopic and microscopic changes in left clipped kidneys. Hydronephrosis rabbit experimental model is feasible and reproducible. This model could help to study pathology of the urinary tract and for teaching and training of residents.
