ABSTRACT
ANTECEDENTS. Infections in the urinary tract are the most frequent ones during pregnancy. They can be present at any time of conception. They can cause serious maternal and perinatal morbility (premature childbirth, underweight product, and a premature rupture of membranes),1 thus the importance of an effective managing when an asymptomatic bacteriuria is detected in these patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. A retrospective study was done in 83 pregnant women (internal and external patients). The variables were age, period of pregnancy, clinical symptoms, diagnosis method and treatment.
RESULTS. The age group in which a urinary infection was most frequently present was 20-27 years old (27.7%), and the least frequent was 30-34 years old in (1.08%); the germ most frequently found in the urinalysis test (UA) and in the urine sediment test was Escherichia coli.
CONCLUSION. Urinary infections can be mainly present during the last three months of pregnancy. The prevalence is of 1.78%, which is relatively low according to literature, and the most vulnerable age group is 20-24 years old, contrary to what has been reported: that at an older age the possibility of suffering from urinary infection is greater, and it is believed to be due to a low socio-economical level as well as to poor sanitary habits.
