ABSTRACT
Nosocomial infections are a major cause of long stay in hospitals; blood culture is a study of choice to confirm bacteremia and may suggest a definitive diagnosis, and the orientation of the therapy against a specific organism. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of microorganisms isolated from blood cultures of patients in highly specialized regional Hospital “Ciudad Salud”, Tapachula, Chiapas. Performing a retrospective descriptive study, we reviewed the results of blood cultures during August 2007 to September 2009 in the area of microbiology clinical laboratory of the hospital. We used statistical analysis chi-square (X
2) with a Yates correction. It was considered as a positive for growth of a microorganism with at least one sample of blood culture. The prevalence of microorganisms isolated was determined according to the site of specimen collection and to the service which the patient came from. 321 blood cultures were processed, of which 14% were positive. Out of blood cultures obtained from catheter (n = 56), 32% were positive. The most frequently isolated organism was
Escherichia coli.
