ABSTRACT
In order to identify risk factors in the presentation of type 1 diabetes, we studied 190 patients of the Medical Center “La Raza”.
We found a higher prevalence of females (59.47%) with an age of onset between 8 and 13 years compared to 40.53% in males with an age of onset between 10 and 15 years (51.2%). White phenotype prevailing over non-white Hispanic (65.79%).
A control group was included in order to study family history. A family history for type 1 diabetes was positive in 10.52% of patients and in just 1.05% in the control group and for type 2 diabetes this history was positive in 72.63% and 52.68% in the former and latter groups respectively.
The risk factors identified for diabetes mellitus type 1 are: positive family history for type 1 and 2 diabetes, white phenotype, female sex and pre-adolescence.
This data will enable us to identify a particular group of patients (through studies of genetic markers and insulin sensitivity assays) with very high risk for diabetes type 1 for whom preventive measures could retard the clinical manifestations of this disease.
