ABSTRACT
The word naevus means birthmark in Latin, and it is used to describe an hamartoma, which is the exaggerated growth of a normal tissue. The last name of the nevus indicates its cellular origin. Clinical recognition of the different types of melanocitic and non-melanocitic nevi is of extreme importance to the dermatologist, since it guides the therapeutic options that have to be taken. This review has the intent of describing the major epidemiological, clinical, evolutionary and therapeutic differences of melanocitic and non-melanocitic nevi.
