ABSTRACT
Objective: To determinate prevalence of health problems in an elderly population of the Family Medicine Clinic in Mexico City.
Material and methods: Descriptive, cross- sectional study. From March 2007 to November 2008, a convenience sample in 1,454 elderly persons. A comprehensive geriatric assessment was carried out by means of the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living, the Lawton-Brody Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale; the Tinetti Gait & Balance instrument; the Yasavage Geriatric Depression scale; the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) or the Folstein test; the Hendrich II Fall Risk model, and the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) quality of life test. To relate the diseases and syndromes with Quality of life (QOL), we used the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: A total of 55.2% had urinary incontinence, 57.3%, moderate or severe depression, 12.1%, mild cognitive impairment, and 30% had risk of falling. It showed a statistically significant relationship between poor QOL and the majority of diseases or syndromes.
Conclusions: Geriatric assessment detected a significant number of pathologies, particularly with regard to geriatric syndromes, recognizing a significant number of positive cases. We identified important deterioration in the QOL of patients.
