Abuse, Abandonment, and Neglect of the Elderly at a Family Medicine Clinic and General Hospital in Mexico City

ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify elements that suggest abuse, abandonment, and neglect in elderly patients at two public health institutions in Mexico City. Materials and Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. No randomized sample interviews were conducted with 100 elderly patients; the study was carried out from February to April 2008 and the Elder Assessment Instrument was applied. Results: Of the 100 patients, 61 corresponded to feminine gender and 39, to masculine. Age was 75 years, with an average of 7.5 years of schooling, 85 study participants live with some relative, 39 have a caregiver, 28 of whom relatives. In this study, it was found that 73 evaluated elderly subjects present abuse evidence, abandonment, and neglect. Conclusions: The type of abuse predominated in this group was negligence/ abandonment, and the gender of the victim was more commonly feminine.
