Psychological Violence in Women at a Family Medicine Clinic in Mexico City

ABSTRACT
Objective: Identify the frequency of emotional or psychological violence by the partners of women between 19 and 39 years of age and determine manifestations (verbal abuse, intimidation, threats, isolation, contempt, economic abuse). Materials and Methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The non-random sample is not representative, with a Confidence interval (CI) of 90%, accuracy 10%, and variabilityof p = 0.7 and q = 0.3. The sample comprised 125 women at a public medical institution in Mexico City. It was carried out from March to April 2008 and a selfadministered questionnaire on emotional or psychological violence was applied after receiving prior consent of voluntary participation in the study. Results: With the results obtained by the survey and according to a scale, four (3%) women had no evidence of violence, and 76 (61%) demonstrating evidence of violence: 24 (19%) with moderate violence, and 20 (16%), with severe violence. We observe 56 (45%) women with verbal abuse, 31 (25%) with intimidation, 36 (29%) with threats, 56 (45%) with isolation, 42 (34%) with contempt, 35 (28%), with economic abuse. Conclusions: According to the survey, the data show that 120 (96%) of the women interviewed showed evidence of emotional or psychological violence and 75 (60%) of women do not perceive themselves as victims of psychological violence.
