ABSTRACT
Neuroendocrine tumors of the lung are a rare group of neoplasms with different origin, clinicopathological features and therapeutic strategies compared with non-endocrine lung tumors. They encompasses four entities with different biologic behavior: carcinoid tumor, atypical carcinoid tumor, small cell lung neuroendocrine carcinoma, and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. We present a case of a 52-year old woman with an advanced small cell lung neuroendocrine carcinoma. General features and histogenesis of neuroendocrine lung tumors are discussed, as well as therapeutic strategies in small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung.
