Cognitive Deterioration and Quality of Life related to Health in Elderly at Family Medicine Clinic in Mexico City

ABSTRACT
Objective: To determinate the frequency of cognitive deterioration and associate it to quality of life related to health.
Design: Prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional studies.
Setting: Patients over 60 year’s old rightful claimants of the Familiar Medicine Clinic Dr. Ignacio Chavez that went to consultation, at the gerontology module on the period from January to august 2007.
Statistical analysis: An inferential statistic was made with the uses of chi square and Cramer V test. Using SPSS. V.12 program.
Results: A total of 140 patients were studied with an average of 74.2 years old. The cognitive deterioration frequency was of 12.1% relating: age, school level and job activities. In all dimensions of the Nottingham Health Profile a relation between the cognitive deterioration presence and the bad quality of life was found.
Conclusions: The cognitive deterioration was similar to the reported by other authors. It is remarkable the mention the importance of the daily use of instruments of evaluation for the type of diseases and also to measure the quality of life related to health.
